Short answer: yes, reviews help, and in a small town they are often the difference between the map box and nowhere. But they are one of three inputs. A profile in the wrong category with no reviews loses to a profile in the right category with none; a business closer to the searcher beats one with more reviews further away. Reviews amplify a correct profile. They do not rescue a wrong one.
What Google actually says
Google’s own help page on local ranking lists three factors: relevance (does the profile match the search), distance (how far from the searcher or the place named) and prominence (how well known the business is). Under prominence it states that review count and review score are factored into local search ranking, and that more reviews and positive ratings can improve a business’s local ranking. That is as direct as Google gets about any ranking factor.
Four businesses, four review counts
More than 1,250 reviews. Barossa 50’s Diner in Tanunda, 4.5 stars. Live from Tanunda on 5 October 2026 it was #1 on Google Maps for “burgers tanunda”, top of the map box for “barossa takeaway”, and #2 on Maps for both “breakfast” and “takeaway”. These are generic searches with several competitors; review volume is doing a lot of that work.
18 reviews, 4.9 stars. For Pets Sake SA in Angaston. On the day its new website went live, searched from Angaston, it was #1 in the map box for “pet shop barossa”. In a town with few direct competitors, eighteen honest reviews and a correct category are enough to lead.
0 reviews. Iron Works Mobile Welding. Searched from Mount Barker it was still #3 in the map box for “mobile welding mount barker”, because its Mount Barker page is specific and the competition is thin. Searched from Tanunda and from Adelaide for “mobile welder”, it was absent from Maps entirely. Zero reviews is the ceiling on that profile; the website is doing everything it can.
29 reviews, 5.0 stars, in a competitive market. The Adelaide SEO market itself. When we checked Google Maps for “seo adelaide” from the CBD on 6 October 2026, the #1 listing had 29 reviews, the #2 had 228, and the #3 had 3. The one with three reviews was in the pack ahead of businesses with dozens, apparently on the strength of a business name that matches the search and a CBD address. Reviews mattered; they were not the whole story.
What reviews do not fix
- The wrong primary category. A paver listed as “General contractor” will not appear for “paving” no matter how many reviews come in.
- Distance. A business in Nuriootpa does not get into the Tanunda map box by collecting reviews; it gets there by being relevant to Tanunda searches and, mostly, by being closer. Service-area settings help at the margins.
- A website that contradicts the profile. Different phone number, different business name, services the site never mentions. Google trusts the profile less.
- A suspended profile. Reviews earned by breaking the rules (incentives, gating, batches from the premises) get stripped, and the profile can go with them.
What to do with this
Fix relevance first (category, services, website alignment). Accept distance for what it is and write for the towns where you genuinely are. Then build prominence steadily: a direct review link texted after every good job, a reply to every review, and consistent listings on the directories that already rank for your trade. Our Google Business Profile service does the first and third parts; the reviews themselves have to come from your customers.
