E-commerce SEO · Shopify & online stores

E-commerce SEO for stores that need to be found, not just built.

Why stores are different

Store SEO is collection-page SEO.

People search for categories, then choose a product. “Bull bars adelaide”, “roof top tent”, “barossa shiraz”. Those searches belong to collection pages, and a stock Shopify collection page is a grid of products with no words on it. Giving each collection real copy, buying guidance and the search phrases people actually use is the single biggest lever in store SEO.

Technical faults multiply. One duplicate-content problem on a brochure site is one page. On a store it is every variant, every filter and every tag page. Canonicals, filtered-URL handling and the sitemap have to be right or Google wastes its crawl on junk.

Product pages need more than the supplier’s text. Hundreds of stores paste the same manufacturer description. A paragraph in your own words about who it suits and what it fits is what makes the page worth ranking.

Shipping, returns and payment pages are ranking pages too. Google’s merchant listing features read shipping and returns details from structured data, and customers read them before they buy. We set both up as part of the work.

Store results

A 4x4 store, found around Gawler.

Roam Offroad in Gawler is a Shopify store we rebuilt from an existing base. Live Google checks on 7 October 2026, then its own Search Console averages.

Two more stores we look after. The Hustle Collective in Tanunda sells ten Barossa wine brands from one Shopify cart with live shipping rates, and appears in Google for the names of the wineries it stocks. My Positive Perspectives moved from Wix to Shopify with every product and URL carried across. Neither is used as a ranking claim here, because neither has a non-branded result we would put our name to yet.

What we do for stores

The e-commerce SEO checklist.

  • Collection pages with real copy, written around the searches your customers type, with buying guidance above the product grid.
  • Product descriptions in your own words for the products that matter, starting with the best sellers and the highest margin.
  • Technical clean-up: canonicals on variants and filters, tag and search pages kept out of the index, a sitemap that lists what should rank, redirects for every retired product.
  • Product and merchant structured data with price, availability, shipping and returns, so Google’s shopping features have what they need.
  • Speed on a phone: theme and app bloat trimmed, images sized properly, the checkout reachable in two taps.
  • Google Business Profile for stores with a shopfront or pickup, with products and categories matched to the site.
  • Search Console and GA4 tracking tied to orders, so the monthly report shows which searches produced sales, not just visits.

Questions

Store SEO, answered.

Do you only work on Shopify?

Shopify is where most of our store work is, including rebuilds and migrations from Wix and WordPress, but the SEO work is the same on WooCommerce and on custom stores: collection and product pages that match real searches, clean technical foundations, and tracking that shows which searches become orders.

Why do my product pages not rank?

Usually because the searches people type are category searches, not product searches. Someone types “bull bars adelaide”, not a specific part number. That search belongs to a collection page with real copy, not a product page with a two-line manufacturer description. Most e-commerce SEO is getting the collection pages right first.

Can you fix a store that lost rankings after a redesign or platform move?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we see. The usual causes are changed URLs with no redirects, collection pages that lost their copy, and a sitemap that was never resubmitted. Our technical SEO page covers the audit, and the migration checklist lists the steps.

Does Google Business Profile matter for an online store?

If you have a shopfront, warehouse pickup or a local customer base, yes. Roam Offroad is #1 on Google Maps for “4x4 accessories” around Gawler because the profile is set up properly alongside the store. A pure drop-shipper with no premises gets much less from it.

What does e-commerce SEO cost?

Stores usually sit on the Growth plan at $599 a month because of the number of pages involved; a large catalogue with aggressive competition is the Serious plan. Both are month to month. The pricing page lists exactly what is included.
