Local SEO

Local SEO from scratch: how a brand-new welder reached #1 on mobile for “mobile welding adelaide”.

Most SEO advice assumes you already have a website, some reviews and a bit of history with Google. Iron Works had none of that when it came to us in late March 2026. This is the order we did the work in, the dated numbers that came out of it, and the parts that still aren’t won.

Key takeaways

  • Iron Works started with no website, no reviews and no search history in late March 2026. The foundations (site, Search Console, Business Profile) came before any ranking work.
  • By 23 October 2026 it was #1 on mobile for “mobile welding adelaide” and #2 for “mobile welder adelaide” in Google’s web results, searched from Adelaide.
  • It is based in Mount Pleasant, so the Adelaide map box goes to city-based welders. The web results were the winnable list, and that is where the town and service pages did the work.
  • The result that matters: 22 enquiries through the website in 30 days (20 Sep to 20 Oct 2026), and the owner has hired another team member.

Short answer: we built the foundations first (a fast site with one page per service, Search Console, a properly set-up Business Profile), then added a page for every town the business genuinely works in, then kept Google told about each new page. Seven months later, searched from Adelaide on 23 October 2026, Iron Works was #1 on mobile (#4 on desktop) in Google’s web results for “mobile welding adelaide”. The map box in Adelaide still goes to welders based in the city, and the business has no Google reviews yet, so it isn’t finished.

The starting point: nothing for Google to rank

Iron Works Mobile Welding & Fabrication is Sean McCarthy’s business in Mount Pleasant, in the Adelaide Hills: on-site welding and machinery repairs, fabrication, and steel sheds, carports and pergolas. When Sean came to us in late March 2026:

  • There was no website, so no pages for Google to show and no domain history.
  • The Facebook page was quiet, and Facebook pages rarely rank for service searches anyway.
  • There was a Google Business Profile, but no categories, services or posts set up with search in mind, and no reviews.
  • Customers search for this trade the moment something breaks, by town and in a dozen different ways (“welder”, “mobile welding”, “on-site welding”, “fabrication”).

That’s the hardest starting point in local SEO, and the most common one for a new trade business. There is no quick fix to apply, because there is nothing yet to fix.

The order we did the work in

  1. Foundations first. The website went live in early April 2026, built by our team at JB Digital Barossa, with one page per service (welding repairs, fabrication, sheds, carports, pergolas, verandahs, stainless work for wineries), LocalBusiness structured data, and Google Analytics tracking calls, emails and form enquiries. Search Console was set up and the sitemap submitted, so we could see exactly what Google was doing with the site.
  2. Pages for the towns, written for the towns. Mobile welding is searched by place. The site now has pages for Mount Pleasant, Mount Barker, the Adelaide Hills, Adelaide, Gawler, Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Angaston, Murray Bridge, Mannum and Strathalbyn, each covering the jobs Sean actually does there. We cover how to do these without making thin copies in suburb pages for tradies.
  3. The full phrasing family. Titles, headings and copy that cover welder and welders, welding and fabrication, mobile and on-site, repairs and emergency call-outs, without stuffing. One searcher’s “mobile welder” is another’s “on-site welding near me”.
  4. The Business Profile, matched to the site. Categories, services and hours set up properly, and Google posts added. With no reviews, the profile can’t carry the map box on its own yet, so the website does more of the work. Our Business Profile optimisation page has the checklist.
  5. Social that supports, not replaces. Instagram linked from every page, a shed sale image and video for his socials, Instagram ads, and his Facebook feed on the site. These bring enquiries of their own (more on that below), but they don’t rank for “mobile welding adelaide”. The website does.
  6. Indexing, page by page. New pages were requested for indexing in Search Console as they went live, then we watched which searches each page began to show for. How long that takes is covered in how long Google takes to index a page.
  7. Lead handling, because spam is a ranking side effect. Once the site ranked, bots found the enquiry form. Enquiries now arrive as branded emails with a spam filter, a pre-filter blocks the bot flood before it reaches Sean, and a text reminder goes out for each new lead. SEO that sends the owner a pile of spam isn’t working, even when the graphs look good.
  8. A conversion tool for the biggest jobs. A 3D Shed & Carport Designer on the site lets customers draw their shed and send the plans for a quote. It turns a vague “how much for a shed?” call into a job Sean can price.
  9. Then a push on the bigger-ticket searches (19 Oct 2026). New shed builder pages for the Barossa Valley and Mount Pleasant, three new guides on shed kits, carports and Barossa council rules, and retargeted titles on the shed, carport and pergola pages.

The results, with dates

Every figure below has its date or window. Live rankings move by location and by day, so we quote the check and the Search Console average side by side.

Two more results don’t fit in a table. Since mid-August, 10+ more enquiries came through Facebook Messenger and phone calls, which is where the social work pays off. And Sean has hired another team member to keep up with the work. That is the number an owner actually cares about.

Clicks rose while impressions fell. That is a win, not a warning: August brought a wave of broad “welding” searches where the site sat on page five, and those never turned into calls. Fewer, better searches with a higher click-through rate is what you want. We explain the gap between Search Console averages and live checks in Search Console position vs live rank.

What carries over to any new Adelaide business

  • Know which list you can win. Iron Works is in Mount Pleasant, so for “mobile welding adelaide” Google’s map box shows welders based in Adelaide. Chasing that map box would have been wasted effort. The web results under it were winnable with good town and service pages, and that’s where it now sits at the top.
  • Win your own patch on Maps first. Around Mount Pleasant the profile is #1 on Maps. Reviews are what will stretch that further out.
  • Measure enquiries, not impressions. Impressions fell by almost a fifth between the two windows and the business got busier. Track calls, forms and email taps from day one, or you’ll be judging the work on the wrong number.
  • Build for the jobs you want most. Sheds and carports are the bigger jobs, so they got their own pages, guides and a designer tool. Repairs bring volume; sheds bring margin.

What isn’t won yet

Iron Works still has no Google reviews, the one thing missing from its Maps listing, and the biggest lever left. On 23 October it wasn’t yet in the top 20 for “shed builder barossa” or “carport builder barossa”, where directories and established builders lead. Those pages are four days old as we write this; we’ll recheck in early November and report what moved, either way.

The local business side of this story, written for Barossa readers, is on JB Digital Barossa’s news: from no website to #1 on mobile for “mobile welding adelaide”. The full data, including the position charts, is in the Iron Works case study.

Where we sit

Starting from nothing is where a lot of our trade clients begin. A1 Roofing had no website or domain in August 2026 and took 9 genuine quote requests through its new site in the first seven weeks. The SEO for tradies page has the full approach, and the local SEO services page covers town pages and the map box. Plans start at $349 a month, month to month.
