Short answer: for local searches like “[service] [suburb]”, expect to see movement in Search Console within four to eight weeks and page-one positions in roughly two to five months. A brand-new business in a quiet category can be faster. Competitive, Adelaide-wide searches take longer. The timelines below show the real range.
Six timelines, five businesses
Each row is a non-branded search (nobody searching the business by name), with Google’s average position in an earlier 28-day window and in 5 Sep – 2 Oct 2026. “Before” is the earliest of four 28-day windows from 13 Jun 2026 with at least 5 impressions. Position 1 is the top result; roughly 1 to 10 is page one.
| Business | Search | Before (28-day window) | Now | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Works Mobile Welding | mobile welding adelaide | 26.5 (13 Jun – 10 Jul) | 6.3 | Page one from the 11 Jul – 7 Aug window |
| Roam Offroad | bull bars adelaide | 17.0 (11 Jul – 7 Aug) | 6.1 | Page two, then page one two windows later |
| Iron Works Mobile Welding | mobile welding services adelaide | 27.4 (13 Jun – 10 Jul) | 5.9 | Page three to page one in two windows |
| Becks Bathrooms | bathroom renovations lonsdale | 22.9 (8 Aug – 4 Sep) | 13.4 | Page three to page two; still climbing |
| Barossa 50’s Diner | tanunda diner | 1.2 (8 Aug – 4 Sep) | 1.0 | At the top from its first full window |
| Insect Invasion | pest control norton summit | 60.1 (11 Jul – 7 Aug) | 6.4 | From page six to page one in two windows, after a relaunch |
Iron Works: average Google position, 28-day windows
- mobile welding adelaide
- mobile welding services adelaide
Averages vs live checks. These are Search Console averages across everyone who searched, anywhere in SA. When we ran live searches on 5 October 2026, “mobile welding adelaide” and “bull bars adelaide” held up (3rd and 2nd organic from Adelaide). Some other searches that average page one in Search Console didn’t show the website at all from a nearby town, so we don’t use them here. Check both before you believe a ranking report, ours included.
Why some moved faster than others
Competition. The diner went straight to the top for “tanunda diner” because few businesses compete for that exact search. Adelaide-wide 4x4 searches like “bull bars adelaide” took longer because established Adelaide 4x4 retailers are all after them.
Whether a page existed for the search. Iron Works sat on page three for “mobile welding services adelaide” until pages covering the different ways welding customers phrase things went live. Then it climbed quickly: 27.4 in 13 Jun – 10 Jul, 5.9 in 5 Sep – 2 Oct 2026.
The map moves faster than the website. Becks’ Google profile was #1 on Google Maps for “bathroom renovations” around Woodcroft within months of launch (live check, 5 Oct 2026), while its suburb pages are still climbing in the regular results.
History. Roam’s store already had history behind it, which helped once the pages said what the shop sold and where. A brand-new domain has none of that, so it relies more on being very relevant to very specific searches.
What usually happens, month by month
- Month one: audit, technical fixes, Google Business Profile, and getting the right pages indexed. Search Console starts showing more impressions, often at low positions.
- Months two and three: new and improved pages start appearing on pages two and three for target searches, then creep up. This is the stage where people give up too early.
- Months three to six: local searches reach page one. The phone starts to reflect it.
- After that: holding positions, widening to more searches and suburbs, and responding when competitors or Google updates move things.
It goes backwards too
Rankings aren’t a staircase. May Paving averaged 1.5 for “landscapers gawler” in 13 Jun – 10 Jul and 6.9 in 5 Sep – 2 Oct 2026. Becks’ Reynella page slipped from 1.5 to 3.3 in a month. Short windows are noisy, especially on small numbers of searches, which is why we judge progress over months.
What slows SEO down
- Pages that aren’t indexed, or a site that blocks Google without anyone noticing.
- A website migration or redesign that changes URLs without redirects.
- Thin or copy-paste pages that give Google nothing new.
- No reviews, or a Google Business Profile in the wrong category.
- Targeting the hardest searches first. Win your suburbs, then widen out.
How to track it yourself
You don’t need a paid tool. In Google Search Console, open Performance → Search results, tick Average position, add a Query filter for the search you care about, and set the date range to compare the last 28 days with the previous period. That’s exactly how the numbers in this article were produced.
Two cautions: average position is an average across everyone who saw you, so a single search on your phone can look very different; and searches with only a handful of impressions bounce around. Look at the trend over months, not days.
The timelines in this article come from local searches; the local SEO page explains what that work involves month to month.
