Short answer: if a click for your main search costs more than a few dollars and you need the phone to ring this month, run ads while the SEO builds. If clicks are cheap or nobody is bidding, ads are a poor use of money and SEO alone will do. Either way, fix the Google Business Profile and the website first, because both ads and SEO send people to the same place.
What the click prices say
Google publishes an average cost per click for every search it sells. A few Adelaide and Australian examples from October 2026:
- “seo adelaide”: about 1,300 searches a month, average cost per click about $37.
- “seo agency adelaide” and “seo company adelaide”: about 1,300 searches a month each, about $68 a click.
- “seo services adelaide”: about 480 searches a month, about $98 a click.
- “seo for builders” (national): about 50 searches a month, about $198 a click.
- “web design adelaide”: about 1,000 searches a month, about $17 a click.
- “google ads adelaide”: about 110 searches a month, about $21 a click.
Those prices are what the market has decided a lead is worth in each category. A $98 click for “seo services adelaide” tells you that agencies expect a client from that search to be worth thousands. A $17 click for web design tells you the margin is thinner. For your own trade, look up your top five searches in Google’s Keyword Planner; the pattern will be obvious.
When ads win
- You need enquiries this month. SEO for a competitive search takes months. Our timeline article shows the real curves. Ads start the day you pay.
- A new service or location with no history for Google to rank.
- A season. Air conditioning in December, pest control in spring, tax in June.
- A search you cannot realistically rank for yet, such as a Adelaide-wide term dominated by national brands.
When SEO wins
- Local map-box searches. On the seven Adelaide SEO searches we checked on 6 October 2026, paid results appeared on only two, and the map box sat above everything on all seven. You cannot buy the map box.
- Expensive clicks. At $68 a click, a 5% enquiry rate means $1,360 per enquiry. A page that ranks organically for the same search costs the same each month whether it is clicked once or a hundred times.
- Searches with no advertisers. Many trade and town searches in SA show no ads at all because nobody bids. There is nothing to buy; the organic and map results are the whole page.
- The long run. Ads stop when the budget stops. Rankings built on real pages and a strong profile keep working.
The mistake to avoid
Running ads to a slow website with no reviews and a profile in the wrong category. The ad buys the click; the website and profile lose it. In that situation every dollar of ad spend subsidises a problem SEO would have fixed. Do the free and cheap fixes first, then decide.
Doing both, sensibly
Many of our clients run ads for a season or a new service while the SEO builds, then taper the ads as the organic and map positions arrive. The ad data is useful to the SEO, too: it shows which searches actually convert before months are spent ranking for them. Our Growth and Serious plans build a little of this in: 30% of the plan fee (about $180 or about $330 a month) goes into your Google Ads budget while the SEO builds. The ad budget is spent in your own Google Ads account, so you own the account and the data. Setting up and running the campaign is included. Don’t want ads? No problem. The same 30% goes into extra SEO work instead: more local content pages and blog posts, more directory listings and backlinks, and more Google Business Profile posts. Same price, no lock-in. The Local plan doesn’t include ad spend. For bigger campaigns, our parent studio manages Google Ads for clients where the maths works, and will say when it does not. SEO plans here start at $349 a month, month to month.
