Key takeaways
- SEO for a small business is the work that puts you in front of local people searching Google for what you sell, in the map box and the results below it.
- Do it in order: make sure Google can see your site, get your Google Business Profile right, build a page for each service and area, then become the obvious pick.
- Most of the searches you can win name a service and a place, like “paving gawler”. Four in ten non-branded searches in our 19-site study named a suburb or town.
- Expect movement in four to eight weeks and page one for local searches in roughly two to five months. Competitive Adelaide-wide searches take longer.
On this page
Short answer: SEO for a small business is the work that gets you shown when people nearby search Google for what you sell. That means a website Google can read, a Google Business Profile set up properly, a page for each service and area you cover, and reviews and details that make you the obvious choice. Done in that order, it brings enquiries that don’t cost you per click.
How SEO works for a small business
When someone in Elizabeth types “electrician near me”, Google shows two things. At the top is the map box: three businesses from Google Maps. Below it are the normal results, a list of websites. A small business can win both.
- The map box runs on your Google Business Profile. Google ranks it on relevance (does your profile match the search), distance (how close you are) and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews and mentions elsewhere), as its help page explains.
- The normal results run on your website: whether Google can read it, whether a page matches the search, and whether other sites point to it.
The searches worth winning are short and local. In our study of 19 SA small-business websites, four in ten non-branded searches named a suburb or town, and hardly anyone typed a question or a price word. People search like “paving gawler” or “bathroom renovations norwood”, and they do it on their phone.
The four jobs of small-business SEO, in order
Most SEO advice is a list of 50 tips with no order. For a small business, order is everything: a brilliant blog post does nothing if Google can’t index your site. Here are the four jobs we work through for every business we look after.
- Be visible to Google. Your pages are indexed, the site loads quickly on a phone, and nothing is blocking Google.
- Be on the map. Your Google Business Profile is verified, in the right category, with every service and your real service area.
- Have a page for each search that pays. One page per main service, and pages for the areas you actually want work from.
- Be the one they pick. Reviews, real photos, clear titles and a fast way to get a quote, so the click turns into a call.
Job 1: be visible to Google
Set up Google Search Console (free) and check the Pages report. It tells you which pages Google has indexed and why the others aren’t. Common problems on small-business sites:
- a “noindex” setting left on after the site was built;
- a redesign that changed the page addresses without redirects;
- a site so slow on a phone that people leave before it loads.
Our technical SEO page covers what we check. If your business doesn’t show up at all, start with why your business isn’t showing on Google.
Job 2: be on the map
For most local businesses, the Google Business Profile brings more calls than the website. Get the basics exactly right:
- the most specific primary category that is true (“Paving contractor”, not “Contractor”);
- every service you offer, listed separately;
- your real service area and real hours;
- your own job photos, added every month or two.
It works. On 5 October 2026 we ran the same “paving” search on Google Maps from nine points across Gawler. May Paving was in the top 3 at all nine. The full list is in our Google Business Profile checklist.
Job 3: have a page for each search that pays
Google matches searches to pages. If one general “Services” page is trying to rank for everything, it usually ranks for nothing. Give each main service its own page, and write area pages only for places you genuinely want work from, each about that place.
Iron Works Mobile Welding is the clearest example we have. One general page was trying to rank for every kind of welding job. After separate pages for each service and each town Sean works in, “mobile welding adelaide” went from an average position of 26.5 in 13 Jun – 10 Jul to 6.3 in 5 Sep – 2 Oct 2026 (Search Console averages). The site brought in 6 website enquiries in September 2026.
Spriggs & Co, an Adelaide renovator, got pages written around the suburbs it actually works in. Its non-branded Google impressions went from 1,279 to 3,211 between the 28 days to 5 September and the 28 days to 3 October 2026. It had 11 website enquiries in September. We’re honest that most suburb searches are still on page two: impressions are the first step, page one comes next. How to write suburb pages that work explains how to avoid the copy-and-paste trap.
Job 4: be the one they pick
Showing up is half the job. In our 19-site study, results in positions 4 to 10 averaged a click-through rate under 1%, so being seen isn’t the same as being chosen. What makes people pick you:
- Reviews, asked for after every good job with a direct link. Google says review count and score count towards local ranking, and customers read them (more on reviews).
- A title that says what you do and where, like “Paving Gawler | Driveways, Patios & Repairs”, not just your business name.
- A quick way to ask for a price, on a phone, with the right questions.
May Paving’s quote form asks for the suburb, the type of job and photos of the area. Between 16 September and 11 October 2026 it brought in 12 quote requests through the website, from Two Wells to Bridgewater, most with photos attached so they were ready to price. That came with a redesign, so we count it as the website working, not as an SEO ranking claim.

What you can do yourself this week
An afternoon of owner time covers the biggest wins:
- Set up Google Search Console and check how many pages are indexed.
- Open your Google Business Profile and check the primary category, services, service area and hours.
- Text your last ten happy customers a direct review link.
- Search your main service and suburb on your phone, signed out, and note who is in the map box.
- Check that your home page title says what you do and where.
Keep it simple. Leave keyword tools, backlink packages and daily rank tracking until these five are done. For most small businesses they are where the first enquiries come from. When you get to links, our guide to backlinks covers the kinds worth getting.
What it costs, and how long it takes
Cost. If you pay someone, the median entry plan among 14 Adelaide agencies with published prices was $1,350 a month on 5 Oct 2026. Our plans start at $349 a month, month to month, with no setup fee, no GST added and 30 days’ notice to cancel (pricing).
Time. For local searches, expect movement in Search Console within four to eight weeks and page-one positions in roughly two to five months. Busy Adelaide-wide searches take longer. Nobody can guarantee a ranking, and anyone who does is guessing.
When to get help
Do it yourself while it’s working. Get help when:
- the technical side is beyond you (indexing errors, a slow site, a migration);
- you’re in a busy Adelaide category where competitors have been at it for years;
- you simply don’t have the hours, and every week you wait is enquiries going to the business in the map box.
If you’re weighing up who to hire, read agency vs consultant vs freelancer. Whoever you choose, start with an audit so you know what you are paying to fix. Ours is free, and it is the first step of every local SEO plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO worth it for a small business?
Usually, if people search Google for what you sell in the area you serve. Check by typing the search your best customer would use. If competitors show up in the map box and the results, there is demand, and SEO is how you get a share of it. If nobody is searching (a very new product, or work that only comes by referral), spend the money elsewhere first.
How much does SEO cost for a small business in Adelaide?
Among 14 agencies serving Adelaide that publish prices, the median entry plan was $1,350 a month when we checked on 5 Oct 2026. Our plans are $349, $599 and $1,099 a month, month to month, with no GST added and 30 days’ notice to cancel. The full breakdown is in how much SEO costs in Adelaide.
Can I do SEO for my small business myself?
Yes, a lot of it. Setting up Search Console, filling in your Google Business Profile properly, asking for reviews and writing a page for each service are all jobs an owner can do. The checklist in this article is a good start. People usually get help when the technical side gets in the way, when they run out of time, or when they compete in a busy Adelaide category.
How long does SEO take for a small business?
For local searches like “[service] [suburb]”, expect movement in Search Console within four to eight weeks and page-one positions in roughly two to five months. Busy Adelaide-wide searches take longer. Real timelines from five SA businesses are in how long SEO takes.
Do I need a new website for SEO?
Usually not. Most SEO work happens on the site you have: fixing indexing, titles, pages and the Business Profile. A rebuild only makes sense when the site itself is the problem, for example very slow on phones, impossible to edit, or built in a way Google can’t read. If you do rebuild, keep your rankings with a proper migration.
What is the difference between SEO and Google Ads?
Ads put you at the top while you pay for each click and stop when you stop paying. SEO earns the map box and the normal results, which keep sending enquiries without a cost per click, but it takes months. Many small businesses run both for a while. See SEO vs Google Ads.
